Orvieto - Cività di Bagnoregio - Orvieto
We meet in Orvieto where you will be greeted by your BCT trip leaders. After a delicious welcome lunch your leader will provide you with detailed information regarding daily rides and the week's itinerary. Lunch is followed by a quick bike fitting, and then were ready for a warm-up ride to the beautiful village of Cività di Bagnoregio just over the border in nearby Lazio. Tonight after our ride we welcome you with an upscale four-course dinner at a local organic winery.
Today we embark on a challenging loop ride in the hills surrounding Orvieto. We climb past vast vineyards and olive groves and catch distant views of the stone houses of Orvieto clinging to the fragile foundation of tufo upon which the city lies. An extended climb takes us through a serene nature reserve and at the summit we will enjoy a traditional picnic prepared by your trip leaders in the shade of the forest before descending into the valley. Stop off for gelato and take in the views of medieval castles and green rolling hills before finishing back at our accommodation where we will dine comfortably on a home cooked meal prepared by our hosts in Orvieto.
Orvieto - Todi
Gain some more elevation today as we ride into the Appenine mountains to the medieval hilltop town of Todi. The first half of our ride is one big 10km climb which many would consider great training for a week in the Alps! At the summit stop for a coffee or gelato at the cafe before descending through golden mountainside sunflower fields while Todi watches us from atop it's high hillside vantage point. Ride through Todi's main square and grab a bite to eat before we finish with a dip in the pool at our countryside accommodation which offers stunning views of Todi. Tonight is a free night for dinner but first we will warm-up for a night on the town with a private wine tasting at a nearby Cantina.
Today is a lovely little loop that has a bit of everything, hills, flats, views, little to no traffic, and fun descents. Pedal by the medieval hamlets, castles, and keeps that dot the hillsides here and be happy that we still have knocked out three big days and still have three more days of fantastic routes to go! We this in mind, we thought we would keep the kilometers to a minimum to allow some recovery time, so tonight is great night to enjoy an aperitivo on the veranda of our accommodation followed by a private Umbrian cooking course on location. Dinner is literally in your hands tonight!
Todi - Bevagna
Today is another memorable route that moves us from the steep hills of Todi to Bevagna and the fertile Tiber river valley. Flanked by the impressive Monte Subasio one one side and the village of Montafalco, which just happens to be the epicenter of the best Umbrian wine, on the other. Post ride we will embark on a private walking tour of the medieval center of Bevagna with a local expert and learn more about it's Roman roots. Tonight is a free night to experience Bevagna on your own.
Today is most likely the easiest day so far of the tour with the only climb be up to Montefalco at the beginning of the day. Take time to stop for a coffee in the unique main square before continuing on our day in the river valley. Pass by medieval fortified villages and catch glimpses of Assisi on the lower slopes of Monte Subasio as we make our way back on an old train track line, now converted to bike path which follows along the river. Post-ride we have a private visit to a third generation family operated organic olive farm and get a behind the scenes look at how olive oil is made before we have our very own "professional" olive oil tasting, each specially paired with vegetable dishes. Tonight is our last night so we will go out with a bang with big farewell dinner at a local eatery in the center of Bevagna.
Bevagna - Assisi
Today is our last day and arguably the easiest as we encounter almost no significant climbs and our only noticeable gain is the last haul into the small city of pink stone, Assisi. The route along the way takes us through quiet country roads in the valley to tiny one lane roads through dense olive groves that silently keep watch upon the valley floor. We will give you time to explore Assisi and have a leisurely lunch before providing you a shuttle to the train station or your nearby accommodation in town.
