All excursions offered by Broken Compass are subject to our standard terms and conditions, which are stated here below, are in all pre-departure material we provide to our clients, and are provided upon request. Please read all terms and conditions material before completing your reservation. The terms and conditions are stated below to notify you that our obligations to you are limited.
Reservations, Prices, and Payment
To reserve an excursion we require a deposit of $500 per person. The balance of your payment is due 60 days prior to departure. If reserving your excursion within 60 days of departure, full payment is required. Payments are in U.S. dollars, and can be made by PayPal, check, or money-order. A single supplement of $250 USD will be charged to each individual traveler who wants a private room throughout an excursion. On request Broken Compass can attempt to arrange a shared room with another guest who may be traveling alone if you wish to avoid this extra charge.
We must receive your deposit to confirm your reservation. Once it is received, we will send you a confirmation including details about your excursion. To finish your reservation, you must complete, sign, and return a Traveller Information Form and Acknowledgement of Risk, Release and Indemnity 30 days prior to the beginning of the excursion. Your confirmation includes these forms.
Broken Compass strictly follows its cancellation policy and will make no exceptions. If for some unfortunate reason you have to cancel your excursion, our policy is simple. Your excursion price only includes anything purchased directly from Broken Compass.
If you must cancel your reservation, the fees for doing so are as follows:

30-7 50% of trip price
7-0 100% of trip price
Should you cancel your reservation 60 days or more in advance of the departure date, you may put the entire $500 per person deposit into a future credit to be used towards a Broken Compass excursion departing within 12 months of the original excursion cancellation date. This credit can only be applied once. Between 60-31 days prior to your original departure date, you may transfer to a different excursion in the same calendar year upon payment of a fee of $150 per person. If you cancel this subsequent reservation, then the cancellation fees applicable shall be the higher of the cancellation fee on your original reservation or the cancellation fee on the excursion to which you transferred. Within 30 days of departure, the regular cancellation fees apply.
* Broken Compass is not responsible for expenses incurred in preparation for any cancelled excursion, such as airline tickets. We recommend confirming your excursion with us before making rail/air arrangements that might be non-refundable.
* Broken Compass reserves the right to make date, route and other modifications as needed.
* Broken Compass reserves the right to cancel any excursion at any time for any reason if there are too few participants. On the rare occasion when Broken Compass must cancel an excursion, all payments received to date will be refunded, which constitutes full settlement.
* Clients who fail to provide a signed “Release and Liability and Assumption of All Risks" form, and personal information forms prior to departure will not be allowed to join the excursion and the cancellation policy applies.
Sending in a deposit toward your excursion and returning your reservation forms, you certify that you do not have any physical conditions or disabilities that would create a hazard for you or other travelers.
Our excursions are priced based on the euro exchange set in September 2011. In the event of currency fluctuation; we reserve the right to adjust our rates accordingly.
If space is available, we can transfer your deposit to another excursion providing you contact us at least 90 days prior to your original departure date. Transfers must be applied to a excursion departing to the same region and in the same calendar year. Transfers between 90 and 61 days incur a $100 fee per person. Transfers are not accepted for any excursion departing in less than 61 days.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, Broken Compass may have to make partial changes to the stated itinerary. All efforts are made to keep changes to a minimum, and maintain high quality excursions. Broken Compass reserves the right to cancel any excursion at any time for any reason, including if there are too few participants, or if the quality of the trip or the safety of travelers is judged by Broken Compass in our sole discretion to be compromised. In such cases, a refund of payments received by Broken Compass shall constitute full and final settlement. Broken Compass is not responsible for any loss incurred on account of non-refundable or non-transferable air tickets. We reserve the right to cancel any excursion that does not reach the minimum level of participation. In the unlikely event that we cancel a tour, you will receive a full refund. Broken Compass will not reimburse for any personal expenses due to changes in itineraries or excursion cancellations, such as prepaid hotel expenses or airline tickets. Broken Compass reserves the right to decline a reservation or to refuse service during a excursion to anyone whose health or behavior could impede the welfare or enjoyment of fellow guests. An individual may be asked to leave an excursion if the leader feels that the person's continuing participation may prove detrimental to the individual or to the well-being or enjoyment of other guests.
Travel within a group invariably involves a compromise to accommodate diverse desires, personalities, and physical abilities of all group members. Broken Compass group leaders may be required to improvise and exercise good faith, use discretion and/or make decisions based upon a group consensus. These decisions may not always please each individual, but are intended to satisfy the larger desires of the group. Guests are responsible for choosing an excursion that suits their abilities, level of fitness, and state of health. Guests must respect the laws and customs of Italy while on the excursion in accordance with leader direction and respect the rights and privacy of other excursion members.
Broken Compass will not assume responsibility for any overseas company or person who fails to provide services that have been contracted for any of its excursions. (In the case of such an event, alternative services will be sought.) In rare instances, we may ask a traveler to switch to another excursion from one that has logistical problems or too few participants; we will attempt to notify you at least 35 days before the departure date.
External Travel Services
Broken Compass may recommend the services of external travel companies or other support services in response to requests made by travelers for services outside of the normal scope of a Broken Compass tour. Although we strive to recommend only companies that provide the highest quality of service and to work closely with them to try to obtain special treatment for Broken Compass clients, we do not guarantee services provided by third parties. Broken Compass is not liable for any injury, expenses or costs arising from any such services, or lack thereof, provided by any third party, nor the standards of care which travelers experience when using those services.
Travel Documents and Passports
The visa and passport requirements of countries to Italy vary according to the nationality of each traveller and may change at any time for reasons beyond our control. Although we try to provide you with accurate information about these requirements, it remains the responsibility of each traveler to verify that he or she has the appropriate travel documents for his or her nationality. Broken Compass is not liable for any expenses or costs arising from any traveler being prohibited from entering Italy to take part in one of our excursions.
By sending a deposit toward your excursion purchase and returning your Traveler Information Form, you certify that you do not have any physical condition or disability that would create a hazard for you or other travelers. Please consult your doctor before departure.
Before traveling on a Broken Compass excursion, we strongly recommend you review your personal insurance and health insurance to ensure you have coverage appropriate to meet your needs, and the needs of your family and dependents, in case of any loss of property or illness, injury or death.
Limitations of Liability
Broken Compass is not liable for bodily injury or property damage as a result of (but not limited to): physical exertion for which a guest is not prepared; forces of nature; travel by plane, train, auto, boat, or other conveyance, or by bicycle, horseback, foot, or other form of active or adventure travel; consumption of alcoholic beverages; civil unrest; terrorism; breakdown of equipment; high altitude; lack of or limited access to medical attention in remote locations; and the adequacy of medical attention once provided. Our excursions entail risks and rewards beyond those encountered at home. We count on our travelers to ensure they are healthy and fit; to read our pre-trip materials about clothing, training and medical requirements. Broken Compass is also not liable for: expenses (e.g., meals, transportation, or hotel costs) that are not specified as included in the excursion cost but may be required to get to or from a trip start or end. Broken Compass reserves the right to make route and other modifications as necessary to improve the quality of an excursion or to accommodate the comfort and well-being of guests.
In further consideration for participating in the excursion, our guests agree that Broken Compass, may use any photographic or film records of the trips for promotional and/or commercial purposes, without any remuneration to the guest. The guest agrees to assign all right, title and interest they may have in or to any media in which their name or likeness might be used to Broken Compass. Also guests agree that any testimonials to Broken Compass, assigns all rights to Broken Compass and allows the testimonials to be used for promotional and/or commercial purposes without any remuneration. Photography within this website is copyrighted by Broken Compass and may not be reproduced without permission.
Please note, you will not be billed and your excursion will not be confirmed until a Broken Compass representative has contacted you to confirm excursion availability and pricing. Any additional travel arrangements that you make prior to being contacted by Broken Compass are at your own risk.
We require that travelers be at least 16 years of age (at time of travel) on all trips, with the exception of custom and/or private excursions, self-guided, and single day excursions; where the minimum age is indicated by the age group designation stated.
